Benefits of Renting an Electric Car in Iceland

Lower running costs: Public charging is noticeably cheaper than petrol in Iceland, helping you save on travel expenses.

Cleaner travel: Almost all electricity in Iceland comes from renewable hydro and geothermal sources, meaning electric kilometers here are virtually zero-emission.

Easy, quiet, and confidence-inspiring: Enjoy instant torque for smooth overtakes, one-pedal driving with regenerative braking for descents, and a peaceful cabin for long days between attractions.

Charge while you sightsee: Many chargers are located at service stations, supermarkets, and town hubs, so you can plug in while dining or exploring nearby sights.

Is an Electric Vehicle in Iceland the Right Option for Me?

If you’re mainly driving on paved roads like the Ring Road and don’t mind planning a few charging stops each day, an electric car rental is a great fit for your Iceland adventure.

However, if your route includes the Highlands or F-Roads, a 4x4 vehicle will be required. For more remote regions such as the Westfjords or East Iceland, where charging stations are less frequent, a petrol or diesel rental may be the better choice.

FAQ

FAQs about car rental insurance in Iceland

+/-

Iceland car rental has put together insurance packages so you can have better coverage for lower rates, please review our Insurance page for more details.

Which plugs do EV chargers use in Iceland?

+/-

Public chargers use Type 2 (AC) and CCS2 (DC fast), which are the European standard. If you’re renting in Iceland, you won’t need to worry about extra adapters.

How do I find and pay for charging stations?

+/-

You can use the ON Power app (which is the largest local network in Iceland) to locate, start, and pay for charging. The Tesla app is best for Superchargers, and PlugShare for a live map across all operators. Please note that most posts don’t take contactless cards, so you’ll need to pay through the apps.

How long does EV charging take?

+/-

For DC (Direct Current) fast chargers, plan around 15–45 minutes for a big top-up charge. The exact time will depend on charger speed, battery size, and temperature. AC (commonly found at hotels, etc) top-ups take longer and are best done overnight.

Are there overstay/idle fees at fast chargers?

+/-

At Superchargers, idle (congestion) fees apply when a site is busy (and double at full capacity). The fee will vary depending on the site, so always double-check.

Can I take an EV on F-Roads in the Highlands?

+/-

Electric cars are not recommended for F-Road driving. Only 4x4s are permitted on F-Roads, and they’re only open during the summer. Many electric rental cars are not approved for these roads, and in addition, there are no charging stations in the Highlands, so the chances of getting stranded can be high.

What’s EV range like in the winter?

+/-

Cold weather reduces the range of any electric car. If you are visiting during the winter, plan shorter legs to your journey and keep to the main routes consistently.

Is parking in Reykjavík free for electric cars?

+/-

No. The free-parking concession for electric cars ended in 2023. You should expect to pay the same for parking an EV as a normal car, and standard Reykjavík zone rules and fees will apply.
