Transmission: Manual – Seats: 9 (driver + 8) – Luggage: 3–4 large suitcases with all seats up (much more with rear bench folded) – Drive: 2WD (not permitted on F-roads)
The Renault Trafic (diesel, manual, 9 seats) is purpose-built for group travel in Iceland. It’s the sweet spot between a car and a coach: easy to drive and park like a large SUV, yet roomy enough to carry a whole crew plus luggage. With a torquey, fuel-efficient diesel engine, a smooth-shifting manual gearbox, and a high, confidence-inspiring driving position, the Trafic keeps airport transfers, day trips, and full Ring Road itineraries relaxed and organized. Wide sliding side doors and a tall tailgate simplify loading, while smart interior storage helps keep the cabin tidy when nine people are in and out all day.
Space that works in the real world
Inside you’ll find three rows of passenger seating (3-3-3) behind the driver, providing space for up to eight passengers plus the driver. The upright seating position gives everyone good visibility, which is especially welcome on scenic routes like the South Coast or Snæfellsnes. The boot comfortably handles 3–4 large suitcases with all seats in use. Need more room for gear? Fold the rear bench to open a longer, flatter cargo bay for duffels, tripods, a week’s groceries, or equipment for a photo or hiking trip. Low loading height and a square opening make packing fast when the wind picks up.
Comfortable cabin, simple tech
The Trafic focuses on the features groups actually use: effective air-conditioning (with rear airflow on many models), supportive seats for long days, and straightforward controls that keep the driver relaxed. Connectivity is easy with Bluetooth, USB and a 12V outlet for charging devices and running navigation or playlists. Large mirrors and good outward visibility make lane changes and tight car parks less stressful; many vans also include helpful parking aids.
Diesel efficiency, manual control
The economical diesel engine delivers steady torque for hills and headwinds while keeping fuel stops sensible on long stages. Paired with the manual transmission, you have precise control when pulling away on inclines, passing slow traffic, or easing along gravel access roads to viewpoints and guesthouses. Ride quality is calm for a people mover, and the Trafic feels stable at Iceland’s typical cruising speeds even when fully loaded.
Safety you expect for a group
You’ll find ABS, stability control, multiple airbags, and ISOFIX child-seat anchors for family trips. Seasonal tyres are fitted as standard—winter tyres from November to April and quality summer tyres the rest of the year—so you’re set up for Iceland’s changing conditions. As always, drive to conditions: reduce speed on gravel, allow longer braking distances in wind or rain, and plan extra time during winter.
Where you can drive
The Renault Trafic is ideal for paved roads and well-maintained gravel routes nationwide: city sightseeing, Golden Circle, South Coast, Ring Road segments, conference shuttles, or family reunions. As a 2WD passenger van, it is not permitted on F-roads or rough Highland tracks. If your plan includes the Highlands, choose a 4×4 instead.
